  2. produced by a change in the DNA that makes up 
  3. the hereditary material of all living 
  4. organisms. Mutations, the raw material of 
  5. evolution, result from mistakes during 
  6. replication (copying) of DNA molecules. Only 
  7. a few improve the organism's performance and 
  8. are therefore favoured by natural selection.
